Hospitals across the country face the same reoccurring problem: tracking and effectively managing high volumes of mobile medical devices. As a result significant amount of time is spent in searching for the medical equipments as well as purchasing new equipments.With a hospital managing large number of patients , it becomes useful to know to know the location of patients whether he is in room , walking about to see his visitors ,trying to access restricted areas etc .By knowing these information time spent in finding a patient can be saved and RFID provides a viable to achieve this purpose. Reports can be generated to report the last known location of a specific tag as well as the history of all tag movements and thereby, a trace route can be obtained for that particular asset.
However, as with most comparisons to other industries, healthcare seems to be slow in embracing the capabilities of this technology.When compared to the application and proliferation of RFID technologies within industries such as retail merchandising, manufacturing, and others, healthcare seems to be slow in adopting RFID as a technology to create value for the enterprise. Over the years, RFID technology had proved its ability in many applications such as toll collection, access management and manufacturing. With the application of RFID in Healthcare, there are tremendous opportunities to be explored, the first being approach to a smart hospital. RFID technology can effectively authenticate, track and trace patients and medical equipments resulting in an efficient asset management. As a result, it is no longer required to spend precious time searching for assets and instead, healthcare professionals can focus more on patient care and improved workflow.
